Voxengo SPAN is exceptional for taking a look at your mix balance with the master preset. The settings are notched, so you set it quickly because there's not too much dabbling about. You can use the channels on your master bus, but a lot of people love the SSL Master Bus Compressor. It adds a lot of harmonics! Not transparent. You can do things like use low tape speeds to thicken the low end and smooth out some high frequencies, etc. I'm not a fan of digital, sterile mixes so I actually use NLS combined with tape emulation to try to simulate older methods. Then I go crazy and add Waves Vinyl, (subtly) too. I like to use J37 during mixing and master tape on the master bus. The imperfections it adds, and the saturation, definitely adds color.
