Voxengo SPAN is exceptional for taking a look at your mix balance with the master preset. The settings are notched, so you set it quickly because there's not too much dabbling about. You can use the channels on your master bus, but a lot of people love the SSL Master Bus Compressor. It adds a lot of harmonics! Not transparent. You can do things like use low tape speeds to thicken the low end and smooth out some high frequencies, etc. I'm not a fan of digital, sterile mixes so I actually use NLS combined with tape emulation to try to simulate older methods. Then I go crazy and add Waves Vinyl, (subtly) too. I like to use J37 during mixing and master tape on the master bus. The imperfections it adds, and the saturation, definitely adds color.
They included the imperfections, so each channel is a little (and sometimes a lot!) different from the next. This is wild! They modeled 32 channels from 3 different classic consoles. Built in limiter (not truepeak.) This is rarely used by anyone on a master bus, but you CAN. 3 types of compression, 3 types of saturation. A stereo width control that actually works well (used sparingly.) Good EQ & filters, presence knob. Really good hardware style mix finalizer.

For example, you're better off doing a some compression and a little limiting on each submix bus so that you don't have to do SO much on the master bus. It is true that doing as much as you can on the track & submix bus level is the best way to target your problem solving.
